Getting into Character!
A few tips and tricks that'll bring your character to life!
One of my favorite parts of role playing games is getting to make another lil guy. Be it a goblin working in the research and development arm of a trap factory, or a a human spacer drifting out alone in the vast searching for a place to belong, making a new character is one of the quickest ways to open the door to a host of new adventures. These tips may work best when used in group settings but I’m sure there’ll be something my solo gamers can glean from here as well!
Understand your setting:
My first tip is to really get a grasp on the world/are your player will inhabit. You may want to understand the power structure of the local government if your character is going to have a political side. The local flora and fauna might impact how your woodlands hermit character interacts with the land. The setting in any game will greatly impact what kinds of individuals you’ll find there. Bringing a high elven prince into the gritty world of Cyberpunk Red might end up breaking immersion for some players. Which of course isn’t to say it’s impossible but defer to your GM and see what you can make as a work around! I’d suggest having a corpo character with body mods that give them an elven aesthetic and have them be their heir to some megacorp entity. Now your character has ties to the world and you can even start building some of their inner circle out.
Work with your fellow players (if in a group)
Given the collaborative nature of these games it makes sense that you may want to consider having you character already know a couple of the player characters at your table. You can set up familial bonds like siblings or distant cousins, you might also think of social bonds like guildmates or industry rivals! Creating bonds like these early on make for strong characters that give your companions an easy reason to be just as invested in your character as you are.
Give them a voice!
Be it a silly nasally toned wizard or the gruff and gravelly voiced barbarian voices give your character a huge dose of personality. It can be daunting at first to one find a voice you feel fits your character then two debut that voice live at the table but your friends at the table are sure to love it (as long as of course you don’t take this as an excuse to go into racial caricatures, remember to be respectful and understanding)
These are just few starter tips to get the creatives juices behind your character creation process flowing, if you have any other tips or tricks you enjoy using please feel free to let me know in the comment section!
